 Skate Programs

Adult CanSkate
Adult skating is growing in popularity and more and more clubs are offering recreational, test and competitive opportunities to this segment of the population. Adults participate in CanSkate, STARSkate and CanPowerSkate programs as well as on Synchronized Skating teams. Adult championships currently provide opportunities to adult skaters to experience the challenge of a competition in a fun, social environment. Skate Canada is currently expanding its programming in this area.

CanSkate Program

What is CanSkate

CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program designed for beginners of all ages (age 4 and up). When you sign up for CanSkate (Stage 1 – 6) you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation, and basic skill development. Skaters are introduced to the six fundamental skating movements: forward skating, backward skating, stop, turn, spin, and jump, and earn badges and other incentives as they complete each Stage.

Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP-certified professional coach. Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music, and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs.

What to bring:

Skaters must have their own skates, rentals are not available

  • Mitts/gloves

  • CSA Approved mandatory for all CanSkaters until Stage 6

  • Should be warm and comfortable and allow for easy movement.

Why sign up for CanSkate?

CanSkate is Canada’s only national learn-to-skate program and is recognized as one of the best programs of its type in the world! It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner.

When you/your child registers for a CanSkate program with Century Skating Club, you also become a member of Skate Canada, the national sport governing body for figure skating in Canada. Membership benefits in the CanSkate program can include: Stickers, tattoos, colouring sheets, parent information sheets, progress updates and report cards, special CanSkate events and club functions, CanSkater of the Year award program, opportunity to be talent-scouted and the opportunity to participate in a positive healthy lifestyle activity.

What comes after CanSkate?

Skaters have different options as to where to go after they have completed the Canskate Program. If they are interested in Figure Skating, they can move on to STAR Skating Program. If they are more focused on Hockey/Ringette fundamentals then the PrePower or CanPower Programs is the next step.

*Helmet Use Policy: This is a proactive safety measure to help protect members in the early stages of the CanSkate program and prevent future injuries to its members that are learning how to skate.

*Please note: Although face masks are not mandatory, Century Skating Club recommends young skaters may benefit from the added protection.

StarSkate Group Program
StarSkate group lessons are for those who transition from the CanSkate progran and prefer to learn to figure skate in a group setting. The 3 disciplines in a skating (skating skills, free skate and dance) are introduced in a group lesson format. Formal testing by Skate Canada judges and test completion certificates are available in each discipline. Coaching costs are shared by the skaters in the group and are paid directly to the coach.

StarSkate Program
StarSkate offers skaters an opportunity to learn and develop more advanced skating technique in free skating, ice dancing, skating skills and artistic skating. StarSkate skaters may also take optional tests and participate in StarSkate competitions in each of these areas. StarSkate skaters work individually and occasionally in small groups with private coaches to attain test certificates from Preliminary to Gold levels.

STAR 1 to 5 Level

The STAR 1-5 program offers the best-in-class figure skating curriculum in Canada, targeting athletes looking for a future in the sport. Taught by Skate Canada NCCP coaches, the program introduces participants to the basic figure skating elements to create the foundation for singles, pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating.

STAR 6- Gold Level

STAR 6- Gold is an assessment and event structure for skaters who completed the STAR 1-5 Program. This structure builds on the skills acquired in STAR 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.

Competitive Skate/Podium Pathway
CanSkate or StarSkate skaters who show potential as competitive skaters can move into Competitive Skate. Competitive Skate is a separate stream that incorporates a series of tests and other training opportunities to help competitive skaters with potential to advance from local to provincial to national championships and beyond. Skaters can participate in the Competitive Test program for Singles, Pairs, or Ice Dancing and by doing so can become eligible to compete in events referred to as Qualifying Events. Skaters take test specific to the discipline in which they wish to compete.

The Skate Canada CompetitiveSkate Program offers nationally standardized competitions to competitive skaters. These events are the stepping stones to things such as the National Team and the World and Olympic teams. Skaters competing in the qualifying event structure can do so at the Juvenile (optional category), Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior and Senior levels in singles, pair and ice dance.
